I drew in a deep breath as I started packing up my things. Bella’s second week of work went off without a hitch, and there had been no drama from her father in sight. So, I made my way downstairs in the hopes of convincing her to have coffee with me again. We hadn’t talked much since our encounter in the meadow, and I didn’t want that to become a regular thing for us. I didn’t want us to keep hooking up and not talking about it.

She deserved better than that.

“Another successful week in the books,” I said as I approached her desk.

Bella logged out of her computer. “I was just about to say the same thing when I heard your footsteps behind me.”

I leaned against her desk. “And how did you know it was me?”

She giggled. “You have a very distinctive sound to the way you walk.”

“Ah, so you’ve memorized my canter.”

She reached for her purse. “That, and your cologne gives you away every time.”

I chuckled. “So, any plans for the weekend?”

She stood to her feet. “Not particularly. I’m sure I’ll have to field some bullshit with Dad, but other than that, I plan on resting. Yourself?”

“Hopefully, starting my weekend by taking you to coffee?”

Her eyes met mine. “What?”

I straightened my back. “I thought we could make Friday coffee after work a thing we do. We could ride together—or separately—and get some coffee. Maybe a pastry. Just shoot the shit and talk.”

She blinked. “You want to get coffee with me again after what happened last week?”

I shrugged. “Why not? It’s not your fault coffee went sideways.”

She smiled softly. “Yeah, sure. That sounds nice.”

I rapped my fingers against her desk. “Wonderful. You want to drive together or separately?”

And that’s how we ended up in my truck heading to the same coffee house. We grabbed our coffee, and I had to fight Bella in order to pay for the order. Then, we took a seat at the same table that met a very rough fate last Friday. I eased myself into the chair and saw Bella staring anxiously at the doorway as if her father would be coming in any moment to burst our bubble.

So, I took her hand in mine. “It’s okay. Just take a breath.”

She drew in a deep one through her nose. “Do you feel like everyone’s staring at us?”

I smoothed my thumb against her skin. “No. Do you?”

She nodded. “Yeah. I feel like they’re just watching and waiting, you know?”

“I mean, you do look pretty good in that dress. I’d be staring if I weren’t already.”

Her eyes whipped up to mine. “What?”

I released her hand. “What.”

She blinked. “You think I look nice in this?”

I sipped my black coffee. “Of course. You look beautiful in anything you wear.”

Her cheeks flushed. “Thank you.”

I leaned back. “No thanks needed for the truth.”

She cleared her throat. “So, how did your day go? Any news to report?”

I shook my head. “Unfortunately, nothing. Which is rough because I’m awaiting a response from my brothers on a very important email regarding something I feel is critical to the company.
